Seventeen is Swell – But I’m a Cheerleader

Content warning: Conversion therapy

We’re seeing new colours this week as we lift the lid on the Turbine Theatre’s But I’m a Cheerleader. Based on the cult 90s film of the same name, the show follows cheerleader Megan as she is sent to a conversion therapy camp, True Directions, after her family and friends suspect her of being gay. We touch on both the Spring and Autumn 2022 runs of the show, including some of the differences between the two of them and how our views couldn’t have differed more, as well as considering the appeal and importance of teen coming-of-age shows and the impact they can have on theatre as a whole.
